Plutarch Lives, I, Theseus and Romulus. Lycurgus and Numa. Solon and Publicola

Plutarch

"Plutarch Lives" is an anthology of biographies featuring Greek and Roman statesmen, soldiers, and orators. Written by Plutarch, a learned and independent thinker, this collection is an invaluable source of knowledge on the lives and characters of historical figures. These 46 Parallel Lives are planned to be ethical examples in pairs, with one Greek and one Roman figure in each pair. Additionally, Plutarch's many varied works, around 60 in number, including Moralia or Moral Essays, are of high literary value and great use to those interested in philosophy, ethics, and religion.

Plutarch's sweeping biographies contrasting great Greek and Roman leaders examines their strengths and weaknesses, and what made each leader great was never what I had imagined when I began reading. Many years later, I still remember lessons I've internalized from the Lives, and, while I'll never be great in the sense that these men were, I'm forever indebted to them.      source
