The Myth of the Spoiled Child book cover

The Myth of the Spoiled Child

Coddled Kids, Helicopter Parents, and Other Phony Crises

Alfie Kohn

This book challenges commonly held beliefs about children and parenting, revealing how conservative ideology has shaped our cultural assumptions. The author debunks myths about permissive and overprotective parenting and shows that helicopter parenting is actually rare and can be beneficial. The real threat to healthy child development is parenting that is too controlling. The book draws on social science data, logic, and humor to challenge oft-repeated claims about entitled and narcissistic youth. This thought-provoking read has the potential to shift the conversation about parenting in our society.

There’s also a great book called The Myth of the Spoiled Child, which is even more specific about nurturing and supporting kids and so forth. That’s been very inspirational.      source
