A tal punto que, si reconocemos que hay tantas historias de una revolución como familias políticas obligadas a definirse con respecto a ella, todas estas historias ofrecen a través de sus opiniones opuestas una obsesión común: el aniversario de un punto cero. En consecuencia, la línea divisoria en la historiografía de la Revolución no es, en términos intelectuales, aquella que separa políticamente, sino la que enfrenta a la historia conmemorativa con la historia conceptual: Michelet y Tocqueville en nuestro caso. Partiendo del ejemplo de la Revolución Francesa, François Furet trata de comprender en qué formá se puede elaborar una historia conceptual de la Revolución. Devolver a ésta la frescura creadora de su propia dinámica y descubrir lo que el acontecimiento presenta como radicalmente nuevo o la continuidad que se asume bajo las apariencias de la ruptura, presupone reconstituir el objeto de estudio diferenciándolo de un desarrollo lógico que lo incluiría fatalmente. Una de las dificultades mayores para el historiador es escapar al cautiverio de la seducción revolucionaria o contrarrevolucionaria, no identificarse con el discurso de la época cuestionada. Así pues, François Furet investiga un fenómeno particular, la Revolución Francesa, pero, preocupado por la producción de conceptos científicos, su ensayo apunta más allá: a la ideología de la revolución. Al hacerlo así, Furet se aparta de la interpretación dominante, marxista, de la Revolución, que considera ésta como como un hecho exclusivamente económico-social derivado de la lucha de clases, y pasa a fijarse en el problema de la cultura política. Recuperando, en parte, los trabajos del injustamente olvidado Augustin Cochin, Furet defiende la idea de una revolución de las elites, iniciada en 1787, que se habría visto frustrada por el Terror de 1793 —cuyos orígenes y antecedentes sitúa Furet en fecha tan temprana como 1789—, al tiempo que señala «una posible consonancia entre el Terror y la Revolución en su totalidad». No sin polémica, los libros de Furet sobre la Revolución francesa han creado escuela, siendo muchos los historiadores que hoy siguen sus líneas metodológica y de investigación.
