David Graeber - 2011-07-12
Goodreads

In conclusion: Sometimes a mouse is just a mouse & a bird is just a bird. But it takes historians, archaeologists, art historians, and classicists to look at context and help us analyze finds in situ. Also, I love this book so much & recommend it strongly:      источник

The Lure of the Arena
Social Psychology and the Crowd at the Roman Games
Garrett G. Fagan - 2011-03-31
Goodreads
"The Lure of the Arena" explores the captivating phenomenon of why thousands of Romans flocked to watch brutal gladiatorial games. Rather than theorizing about the cultural function of the arena, the author delves into the social-psychological dynamics that attract individuals to public rituals of violence. This book provides a fascinating insight not only into the Roman games but also into ourselves and our own attraction to such events.

@wmarybeard I think perhaps we have discussed this before, but I cannot write about gladiators w/o Garrett's splendid book on the sociology of violence in games. For Richard's Festschrift he also wrote an epic chapter on gladiatorial schools if you want It. Good luck!      источник
