La Historia general de los robos y asesinatos de los más famosos piratas es la fuente principal y mejor documentada de la que han bebido tanto los estudiosos de la Historia de la Piratería como los novelistas que crearon la leyenda romántica y universal de aquellos marinos, proscritos y temerarios, cuya única patria era su propio barco y los océanos.
Publicada originalmente (la primera parte) en 1724 con la firma del Capitán Charles Johnson seudónimo tras el que se ocultaba, como se ha sabido mucho después, el autor de Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe, Historia general de los piratas se inicia con las biografías de diecisiete notables piratas ingleses de la época (Avery, Mary Read, Barbanegra...), acompañadas de consideraciones generales sobre la piratería, sus peligros para las naciones, sus causas y posible remedio. Tras esta primera parte, dedicada a la piratería en occidente, la segunda se ocupa de los capitanes y tripulaciones que actuaban en torno a Madagascar, la costa africana y el océano Índico.
Se remonta Defoe siete años atrás para fechar el origen de su Historia General al año 1717, año en que el rey Jorge I publica el famoso «Edicto para la supresión de los piratas», ofreciendo el perdón real a los capitanes y tripulaciones que abandonasen sus actividades delictivas, y arbitrando medidas de fuerza para acabar con quienes persistieran en el bandidaje marítimo.
