The Myth of Religious Violence

This book challenges the idea that religion promotes violence in Western society. William T. Cavanaugh examines how the categories of religion and the secular are constructed and argues that there is no transcultural essence of religion. He suggests that the concept of religion as non-rational and prone to violence is a myth used to legitimate neo-colonial violence against non-Western countries, particularly the Muslim world.
