La casa de hojas book cover
La casa de hojas
Mark Z. Danielewski - 2000-03-07

@MCAsche House of Leaves by Mark Danielewsky. Read it 20 years ago when it came out, it's stuck with me like almost no other book. It's just otherworldly.      fuente

@AIsakovic1 @j_bertolotti I suggest checking out the ‘ungrading’ movement, and the book edited by Blum      fuente

Calificación de Goodreads
This influential book delves into the emotional lives of young boys, exploring why they may appear tough and confident, but are often sad, lonely, and confused. The author challenges traditional expectations about masculinity that drive boys' true emotions underground. Based on groundbreaking research, Real Boys provides insight into how parents can help their sons cultivate self-confidence and navigate difficult issues such as depression, love, and violence. A must-read for anyone with a son or working with young boys.

@digorytoothman @SecondGentleman Right - I think the label of 'toxic masculinity' would be bad marketing and lots of folks would tune out as the term is rather academic, and has lots of baggage going with it. But like the 'Real Boys' book, lots of ways to talk about it meaningfully without using this terminology      fuente

Hope Jahren - 2020-03-03
Calificación de Goodreads
From the bestselling author of Lab Girl comes a slim, urgent missive on the defining issue of our time: here is Hope Jahren on climate change, our timeless pursuit of more, and how the same human ambition that got us here can also be our salvation. Hope Jahren is an award-winning geobiologist, a brilliant writer, and one of the seven billion people with whom we share this earth. The Story of More is her impassioned open letter to humanity as we stand at the crossroads of survival and extinction. Jahren celebrates the long history of our enterprising spirit—which has tamed wild crops, cured diseases, and sent us to the moon—but also shows how that spirit has created excesses that are quickly warming our planet to dangerous levels. In short, highly readable chapters, she takes us through the science behind the key inventions—from electric power to large-scale farming and automobiles—that, even as they help us, release untenable amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. She explains the current and projected consequences of greenhouse gases—from superstorms to rising sea levels—and shares the science-based tools that could help us fight back. At once an explainer on the mechanisms of warming and a capsule history of human development, The Story of More illuminates the link between our consumption habits and our endangered earth. It is the essential pocket primer on climate change that will leave an indelible impact on everyone who reads it.

I got to this paragraph on page 5 of The Story of More and I’m just like, *chef kiss* at this prose. The book is superb for intro Env Sci classes, but also a lesson for scientists in how to write with awesomeness. Thanks much to @HopeJahren!      fuente
